Cuckoo clocks are made on the basic mechanical basis of walking watches. In principle, this is an ordinary watch with a fight, but the battle mechanism in this watch beats every half an hour and an hour, accompanying each hit by cuckoo cuckooing that appears in the window of the dial panel.
Sometimes, quite rarely, you can also find a watch with a cricket without a fight.

The principle of operation of the mechanism of the battle (crowing) is simple. It consists in the release of the mechanism to start the movement of the wheel system, combat strikes and their cessation. The switch mechanism automatically unlocks the battle mechanism, after which it acts for a short time. To do this on the minute wheel (32), which rotates on the central axis of the arrows, two pins (33).
These pins rotate with the wheel, which, as you know, makes one revolution per hour. Every half hour, the pin raises the two-armed battle engagement lever (5) This lever abuts against the pin of the locking lever axis (8) and raises it.
Two wooden whistles are installed in the watch case. Small furs with lids made of leather are attached to the upper ends of these whistles. Lifting rollers (18, 19) that interact with the asterisk (20) When one of the bellows rises, it also lifts the cuckoo's tail. Due to this, the cuckoo figure leans forward. The figure itself is mounted on a swivel bracket (6).
When the lock lever is raised, it releases the locking wheel pin (10) and the wheel scrolls a little, as a result of which the pin located on it falls onto the protrusion of the two-shouldered switch lever.
After all these actions, the pin of the minute wheel will move so much that it releases the two-arm switching lever lying on it. When the minute hand approaches the number 12 or 6, then this falling lever returns to its original position. In this way, the locking wheel pin is released and the cuckoo mechanism is actuated.
The appearance of the cuckoo is as follows: the cuckoo figure is mounted on a special bracket, which is actuated by the lever of the closure of the battle mechanism. When the lever rises, the cuckoo's bracket rotates, opening the door and at the same time pushes the cuckoo out of the window.
When lifting bellows draw in air. When the bellows are lowered, the weight of the lids acts on them and air escapes through the whistle. As a result, the whistles make a sound resembling crowing.
To ensure that the hammering strictly corresponds to the indications of the hands of the clock, a counting circle is built into the battle mechanism. It is connected to the counting wheel (24) and a rotating counting tribe (23), which is mounted on the axis of the sprocket. The ledges of unequal size are located on the counting wheel (the size of the protrusions depends on how many required cuckoo or battle signals are provided in this watch design). When turning the counting circle, the next recess is under the counter lever (7) This lever lowers with the locking lever and stops the locking wheel (10), and together with it the whole mechanism.
Defects in the battle mechanism
If you find that the cuckoo figure is stuck and cannot return to the watch case, which is why the door does not close, open the back wall of the case and check where the tail part of the figure is. It should be located on the upper plane of the whistle. If the tail jumped off it, return the cuckoo to its original position and secure it tightly to the bracket.
If the sound of the cuckoo's voice seems too weak or sounds cracked and distorted, then unscrew the screws holding the bellows and remove the bellows from the case. Raising and lowering the bellows, check their sound. The reason may be a clogged sound gap of bellows. Having cleared a sound gap of furs, achieve the necessary tone and power of sound. In the event that the sound is rattling, the fur lever must be slightly bent up. If the sound is too weak - down.
If the cuckoo sound on the half hour and clock does not match the hands, check the pin of the swivel roller. It can be bent. To fix the problem, the pin is bent up. This can easily be done without disassembling the watch, but simply opening the door in the right window of the case.
If the number of battle strikes does not correspond to the actual readings of the clock hands, remove the battle weight and put the hour hand on the number on the dial, how many battle strikes were. Then hang the battle weight back and set the hour and minute hands to the present.
If the discrepancy still cannot be corrected, then the gap of the counting lever in the grooves of the counting circle is not adjusted. You can adjust it by bending the legs of the counting lever. To do this, you don’t need to disassemble the clock mechanism: just open the back wall of the case and check where the counting circle fights, and bend the nose of the battle enable lever in the right direction.
If you find that the pins of the minute wheel are bent or dropped, do the following. Remove the arrows and, having removed the hook, open the door of the cuckoo. Then unscrew and remove the housing panel. Hang the battle weight and observe the mechanism.
Remove the minute wheel and hub. The bent pins of the minute wheel can be straightened on the mest, and loosely fixed or dropped pins are put back and fixed.

Malfunctions and repairs
A cuckoo clock is a clock mechanism connected to a combat system, which is accompanied by a cuckoo emerging from the opening doors, mounted on an arm. The action associated with crowing, reproduced by two bellows filled with air, occurs every hour or half an hour, depending on the modification of the clock.
The watch is started in two chains: one starts, and the other a battle. Weights are attached to the ends of the chains of the plant, often made in the form of cones. The longer the chain, the larger the plant. The factory watches are divided into those that start once a day, and copies with a weekly factory.
Restoring the normal operation of the watch mechanism, which needs periodic cleaning, washing, lubricating, assembling and checking accuracy. For self-repair, a circuit is required.
- Discrepancy between the time indicated on the dial and the number of sounds made by the cuckoo. Find the cuckoo's turn lever. It is connected to the bracket where the figure is located. Fold it up a little. To find it, just open the door in the housing.
- The time on the clock does not correspond to the battle. For this, it is not necessary to carry the cuckoo clock for repair. First, remove the weight from the chain intended for the battle plant, and set to the time that just sounded. Then hang the weight in place and rotate the arrows to set the real time.
- We deal with the counting circle.
Open the watch lid, find the counting circle, on which there are eleven different protrusions corresponding to each hour. The smallest is responsible for two blows with a hammer, and the largest - for twelve. Install the pin in the protrusion corresponding to the beaten time. This procedure is carried out if your watch’s battle mechanism is based on a counting wheel.
- If the watch strikes not only an hour, but also half an hourthen the watch uses a comb system. It is important to know that it includes a stepped disk (snail), a lever with beveled teeth, called a comb and two pins. A pin located closer to the center of the disk controls the fight for half an hour, and the one that is next is the clock. Compare their location according to the time being pushed. This tuning scheme is successfully used in the repair of Cuckoo Lighthouse watches.
- The cuckoo is stuck. Open the back door of the watch and make sure that the figure is sitting on the bracket tightly, and nothing prevents it from moving the cuckoo out of the window.
- Cuckoo's voice sounds obscure or too quiet. To do this, you need to look at the furs that make a whistle. Release them by unscrewing the screws. Clean the slots and blow them several times. The sound of the fur is adjusted by the lever. Want to add volume, turn it down, and if the sound rattles, then raise the lever up.
