What to do if a cat is lost: tips on where to look, how to write an ad, and not fall into the hands of scammers

The first thing you need to take care of when creating a cat missing ad is to get as many people as possible in order to increase the likelihood of this ad getting in the eyes of the person who actually saw the pet. You can do this by heading the ad with short and succinct text that reflects the essence of the problem, for example, “The cat has disappeared!” Or “Help me find the cat!”. You should not write in capital letters in the heading “Announcement” or “Search”, as these common words are unlikely to arouse people's interest and desire to familiarize themselves with the full text of the message.

Its main part should be devoted to special signs of the animal, which will help those who could see it, understand that this is exactly the cat they are looking for. Indicate here the color of the animal, the color of its eyes, pancake, and size. Special signs, if any, can become especially useful: for example, if the cat has a torn ear or a tail docked. If you have a photo of your pet, it will also be useful to place it in an ad, preferably in color format.

Finally, the final part of the text should indicate how to contact the owners of the cat. In such a situation, it is preferable to give a mobile phone, which will provide the opportunity for prompt communication and, as a result, to obtain relevant information about the location of the pet. If you are ready to give a reward to the person who helps to find the animal, be sure to indicate this in the announcement: perhaps this will serve as an additional incentive for the person who saw him to make the call. It will also be useful to let readers understand how important it is for you to find a pet: you can emphasize this with a phrase like “We really miss the cat!” Or “Call at any time of the day!”.

Ad Placement

In order to maximize the circle of people who noticed the ad and increase the likelihood of finding a pet, you need to not only correctly compose the message text, but also place it where the cat could be seen with the highest probability. If before the loss your cat often walked alone, try to remember or imagine its usual routes and post an advertisement in the vicinity of them.

If the cat was domestic and never went outside, it is worth putting up an ad in neighboring yards, since a frightened animal could hardly have gone far. In addition, it will be useful to place ads in places of significant crowds in your area: at stops, near pharmacies and shops. Finally, it’s useful to stick them near veterinary clinics, as people who take care of their pets themselves will understand your loss and try to help you.

In addition, the text of the announcement can also be placed in local newspapers or in a running line on the local television channel. However, please note that in this case, its text will most likely have to be shortened, so focus only on the most important details.

Hot Track Search

Many owners fall into despair and confusion if they find that a cat has disappeared. Even more depression is visited by the guardians, if the kitten became a victim of circumstances, because he is small, defenseless and weak. However, this approach is erroneous, one might say irresponsible. Accept for the axiom that even the most domesticated, tamed and obedient pet can get lost, this happens, and quite often. Your task is to know what to do and do not hesitate!

Trapped in an unfamiliar area the cat most often hides, and for a long time is in shelter. The animal does not eat or drink until its exhaustion becomes critical. At about 3-5 days, the exhausted cat leaves the shelter. In this case, she is either not able to seek food, or gets into even greater trouble.

Cases of cats returning home on their own are an exception regarding pets who regularly walk without supervision, we will talk about this below.

Unlike dogs, cats don’t run far, so if a pet is off the leash, you need to look in approximate “squares”. You need to move in a spinning spiral, carefully inspecting bushes, trees, tall grass, spaces under benches, hatches, trays of heating mains, etc. A particularly careful inspection is important if the cat is lost in the forest or in another relatively open area. Be sure, the pet is somewhere very close, look until you find it, do not leave the place, even if a lot of time has passed.

Almost all the cats that just got lost,do not respond to nickname and call - this is a consequence of stress. As soon as the ward lost sight of you, he hides in any shelter. You should not leave the place of loss for at least 1–2 hours, since it is likely that the pet will become numb and he will call. No matter what emotions you feel, you need to call a cat in a calm tone, affectionately, without irritation and threats. Even if you are angry, restrain your emotions by any means, even when you find a ward. Your annoyed tone of voice says a lot and if the pet hears you, then being in a state of fright, it will not respond.

Important! Be prepared for the fact that during the search you will have to climb into hatches, cellars, climb over fences, lie on the ground, etc.

Choose appropriate, comfortable clothes, because a frightened pet can not only ignore the call, but also run away from you. If the first wave of searches was unsuccessful, a second sortie must be made at night or in the early morning, while the street is empty. At night, you need to use a powerful flashlight, and it is advisable to move less and listen more. It is important to capture every rustle and sound.

Very often, the pet hears and even sees the owner, but does not go out and is silent, because it is afraid. It is worth considering that a combination of factors such as stress, hunger and thirst quickly exhaust the cat. If the search has been going on for several days, the ward may be exhausted.

In the morning, you also need to use a flashlight. The meaning of the morning sorties is that at dawn the air is more discharged and your “kys-kys” is better heard. In addition to the voice, the cat's attention can be attracted by the rustle of dry food or by tapping a fork on a bowl (food stimulation).

Important! Many cats tend to bite and fight while under stress. If you notice a pet, approach it gradually, take it gently in your hands and be prepared for a not quite adequate reaction.

Quite often in the city you can find a lost domestic cat in places where street tailed cats are fed. Try to find someone who feeds cats to:

  • Tell him (or her) about the loss and, if possible, leave Photo pet.
  • Leave your phone number - Be sure to write it on a separate sheet or submit an announcement about the loss.
  • If found, ask to watch the cat until you come.
  • Promise a solid reward for help and time spent.

Since your pet will suffer from thirst and hunger, you need to leave a few bowls with water and food. Choose places considering that bowls can be seen by passing dogs and other cats. In order not to buy bowls, you can cut off the bottom of 1.5–2 liter plastic bottles. Very often, a lost cat does not go to the owner’s hands, it walks around, purrs, but does not let itself be taken. In this case, you need to stay in place and wait as long as necessary. When a cat behaves this way, she fights stress - this is a normal reaction.

If the cat is lost in the country, be sure to interview the neighbors. As practice shows, in 9 out of 10 cases, one of the neighbors saw the loss, but did not know that they were looking for a cat. The same way should be taken if the ward jumped out of the front door in a multi-storey building. This information will give you the opportunity to look for the ward in the right direction. Cats rarely travel long distances, most often they move in small jerks, trying to find water and food.

Where are the cats hiding?

You need to start with a search of the home, no matter how strange it sounds, but cats are often lost even in small apartments. The owner runs around the porches and basements, and the pet sleeps sweetly in a safe shelter. You need to inspect everything - move furniture, lift sofas and tap pillows on them. After making sure that there is no pet in the house, move on.

If your cat ran out of the apartment, you need to start the search from the top floor and move down to the basement. If the pet gets outside, it will move along the house and, most likely, will crawl into the outlet of the basement (if it is open). This principle can be violated only if the cat is scared.

In almost all apartment buildings, the height from the vent to the basement floor ranges from 1 to 1.5 meters. To a frightened cat, this dark, damp room may seem dangerous, so it does not dare to jump and will sit next to it.

Even if the pet jumps, it is very likely that fleas will attack it and the outcome depends on how scared the animal is. The cat may remain in the basement to be eaten by the bloodsuckers or try to get out. The success of the second scenario depends on whether the ward is exhausted. Even if you really doubt the justice of the above, basements need to be searched, since most of the losses are found in them.

Quite often, the owner thinks that the cat ran away at the door, and she fell out of the window or moved to the neighboring balcony. Naturally, such situations need to be prevented - to put nets or monitor the pet. However, this option should not be missed when searching. Be sure to question the neighbors or leave a note on their door, it is possible that your pet is on the next balcony or even in an apartment.

Carefully inspect the stairwells, especially if the staircase is spiraling. Cats manage to get into narrow crevices and small cavities behind the steps. Often the animal crawls between concrete slabs and feeling relatively safe, does not move and makes no sounds.

Important! Stressed, the cat instinctively moves up, not down. If the pet has run out of the front door, check the roof exits, if they are open - look in the attic, in the ventilation holes and superstructures.

If the cat managed to go outside and she began to move along the facade of the house, shelter can be found in the porch, more precisely, in its crevice or cavity. If there are shops or other commercial facilities on the ground floor of the house, the cat may run into their door or climb into the window. As practice shows, the animal is thrown out onto the street again. Be sure to go all over the basement and are located on the ground floor with offices, shops, etc.

Report the loss, promise a reward, ask if they saw a cat. The problem is that people who have brutally acted will not admit their actions, which will mislead you. Inspect the entrances, the space behind the external doors, any recesses in the floor, the ground, the slots and basements near commercial facilities. A frightened cat, even if put out the door, will prefer to stay close to people.

Being on the street, a cat can run under the car. It was said above that you have to lie down on the ground during the search - this is in order to well inspect the bottom, the space behind the wheels and under the wings. You should have a flashlight with you. It is worth inspecting garages, under the gates of which there are cracks. Since you do not have the right to enter the garage without the permission of the owner, it is advisable to leave notes (to paste ads) with a request to inspect the garage and the car. Naturally, in the note you need to indicate your phone number.

A much less likely runaway cat climbs a tree. Whether the pet will meow is a matter of chance. Many cats are silent, even if they are called. Inspect the trees very carefully, if the branches are too thick, look along the trunk. To catch a cat’s attention, tap on a tree trunk - the voice is not such a reliable signal, compared to vibration.

Note! A dense, tall bush is a good shelter. Bushes need not only to be inspected, they need to be moved and unbent branches.

Ads and other search methods

Constantly informing others about the loss is very helpful in the search process. Paper announcements need to be glued in a spiral shape, starting from the place where the cat was lost. Glue the ads in the permitted places, tape them to trees, etc. Even if you post information only where you can do it, there are those who will break the ad. Update leaflets at least once every 3 days. The minimum quantity is 100–150 pcs. Be sure to place ads near shops and crowded places (schools, kindergartens, hospitals, stops).

Tip:if there is a school near you, try to arrange with teens to distribute leaflets or help with the search.

Enlist the permission of your parents and promise the children a substantial reward (more than enough to be shared). Hands and eyes during searches will not be superfluous, especially since children and without requests pay much more attention to animals.

How to make an announcement about the loss of an animal?

Properly written ad is the key to success, especially considering the likelihood that they will try to deceive you. Yes, scammers often play on the feelings of owners. Unidentified persons call, report that our pet and demand a reward in advance. This is a well-known scheme, but which many inexperienced owners come across. If you want your ad to attract not only scammers, you need to compile it correctly by indicating:

  • Floor.
  • The size.
  • Color and its structure.
  • Several contact telephone numbers.
  • Address of residence.
  • If possible, print color photo ads.
  • One special sign if (!) There are several of them (more on this below).

Highlight important parts of your ad in bold or large print. Be sure to make tear-off roots with phone numbers. In addition to the number, you need to indicate the purpose on the spine, for example, the cat disappeared. Do not focus on the breed! Write a naked cat, not the Don Sphinx. It is not worth mentioning that the pet has titles or is a material value. Make text from the simplest and shortest sentences. Be sure to highlight that for the return of the cat or reliable information about its location, a reward will be received.

If your cat is a thoroughbred, they may pick it up and not give it away intentionally. Empty phrases in ads rarely work (children cry, I worry, etc.), but phrases of the following meanings also work like “needs expensive treatment”, “suffers from a hereditary disease” or “dies without special care”. The kidnappers will rejoice at the thoroughbred find until they find out that a lot of money needs to be spent on its maintenance.

Important! If your pet has pedigree value and the search continues for more than 48 hours, it makes sense to check the bird market and online sites for the presence of announcements about the sale of animals! On the market, all sellers need to hand out flyers with information about finding an animal.

Try to engage in the search for all. Ask the dog owners for help, even if they don’t intentionally look for your cat, but they will show much more attention and sympathy, because they also have a favorite pet. Your task is to inform the maximum number of people about what you are looking for. In the process of posting ads, you definitely need help, because without updating them there is no special effect. There are cases when animals were found in 3–6 months and all just because all residents of the area saw constantly updated posters asking for help.

Tip:if you live on the ground floor or in a private house, always leave at least one window open, in case your pet is lucky to find a way home.

In addition to paper ads, you need to deal with the dissemination of information on the Internet. Make a not too long, informative ad and place it on all available resources. Mandatory ads must be placed:

  • In thematic groups of social networks.
  • At large online trading platforms.
  • On free bulletin boards.

Try to quickly place ads in popular newspapers. If you think that nowadays everyone uses social networks and similar resources - you are mistaken. If there is a local television channel or radio station in the city, it will be useful to advertise in the appropriate section.

How to avoid becoming a victim of scammers?

The likelihood that your ads will be detected scammersis very great. Almost all of them operate according to the same scheme:

  • They call and say that your animal is with them.
  • The voice in the receiver sounds calmly, confidently, it often seems that a person is very educated and, possibly, decent.
  • They demand to pay money in advance with a promise to immediately transfer the cat to you (in an hour, in the evening).
  • They do not agree to take cash, they ask to top up a phone number, very rarely a card.
  • If you refuse to transfer money in advance, threats follow - you will not see your cat anymore, then we will kill it or put it to sleep or throw it into the street.

The above handwriting is guaranteed to be fraudulent, you can be sure that this has been verified by thousands of owners who have believed the promises. Если же в процессе разговора вы сомневаетесь, нужно сделать следующее:

  • Today is the age of technology, ask to send a photo of your pet using MMS, email, any social network or other resource. The fraudster will have the wrong phone or there will be no opportunity for another reason.
  • What is the wrong pet name, ask to call him and ask whether he responded? If the answer is yes, draw conclusions.
Ask for a special omen (if any). There is a subtlety - this sign should not be mentioned in the announcement, and it should not be visible in the photo.
Ask if all the cat’s teeth are in place (even if your pet has all of the teeth), if the answer is yes, say something like: “Hmm, it’s strange my left distant tooth has been removed.” If after your phrase the tooth “disappears” under the pretext: “What do you say? Left, far? Really not ”- these are scammers.

Making money on suffering is a business, and it’s very successful. Be prepared for the fact that scammers will call from different numbers and change their tactics. There can really be a lot of calls. Do not break and do not scream, do not show weakness. Be cool whoever calls you. If someone really finds your pet, most likely he will be interested in "getting rid" of someone else's animal, and not in reward.

Remember that the best medicine is prevention! Do not let your cat go unattended and buy her a collar with an address token or capsule. A cat with a collar (even if it is not purebred) will attract people's attention. On the medallion, be sure to indicate the phone number and nickname (word, phrase). You will be contacted by phone, and by the named word or phrase, you will understand that the cat really was found.
