We compare standard factory firmware, optical drive firmware, and so-called Freeboot. We will consider these firmware separately and, summarizing, we will compile a table in which we will more clearly show the advantages and disadvantages of each firmware.

Standard factory firmware

In a nutshell, she good to all but one - prices licensed games, which range from 1000 rubles for hits of previous years to 2500 for new items. Agree, not everyone can afford to spend that kind of money on games. And if you are one of these people, I recommend that you pay attention to the firmware described below.

Drive firmware

Consoles Xbox 360 with drive firmware LT + 3.0 (or its updated version of LTU 2.0) can read DVD recorders.

Pros:

  • Low price of games. You will not need to spend a lot of money on games, but just download the image of the desired game from the Internet and burn it to a blank DVD-ROM. Or you can buy an already recorded disc in a store (the price of such a disc is 150-200 rubles).
  • The ability to play on the network and exit the console to the Xbox Live network service, which will allow you to download demos of games that have not yet been released, use voice chat during the game, and other network features.

Minuses:

  • You will need to update the console software from time to time to launch new games. It is also worth noting the presence of disk mappings for certain software.
  • The probability of laser failure (this is because the quality of the self-written discs is inferior to the licensed ones).
  • The inability to play downloadable content for free (Xbox Live Arcade games and DLCs released for games).

What is Freeboot? ("freibut") on the Xbox 360? This is a hacked Dashboard (a kind of Xbox 360 operating system) that allows you to run games directly from information storage devices.

Pros:

  • The ability to run games from any USB-drive (from a USB flash drive, external hard drive).
  • The ability to play without a disk in the drive from the console’s internal hard drive.
  • The presence of built-in FTP, allowing you to copy games from your computer through the network.
  • Compared to LT + 3.0 firmware, you will not need to spend money on discs for recording games.
  • Ability to copy games from DVD to internal or external hard drive.
  • The ability to play downloaded content for free (Xbox Live Arcade games and DLCs released for games).

Minuses:

  • As soon as you go online from your console, you will immediately be banned from the Xbox Live network service. This means that using this modification, you can only use unofficial servers for network play.
  • Using the console with Freeboot is a bit more complicated than using a flashed drive.

It is usually installed with Freeboot Freestyle dash. It is used to more conveniently run games on the Xbox 360 with Freeboot.

FSD is an alternative shell for the Xbox 360, it serves to launch games (with support for covers and screenshots), emulators, can display the temperature of the video chip and CPU, adjust the fan speed. In addition, FSD has a built-in FTP server and file manager, which allows you to copy images of games directly from a PC.

Discover Xbox Multimedia

The ideal home system for playing audio and video has not yet appeared on the market - these were our findings before today's article. Although some home DVD players are capable of supporting new standards such as Xv>

The best and easiest way to play multimedia files today comes down to using a PC with a set of fresh programs and codecs. But in home theaters, using a keyboard, mouse, or monitor looks a bit wild.

Back in February, we announced the appearance of a modified Xbox, which can be turned into a multimedia center with minor changes to the hardware and the addition of software. We decided to install the Xbox Media Center (XBMC) on a modified Xbox and see what happens.

Xbox Software: Only With Microsoft's Blessing

To compile software for Xbox you need Microsoft Software Development Kit for Xbox - let's call it XDK for short. The source code is compiled and then signed using the special Xbox libraries in Visual Studio .NET — only then can it run on Xbox. Unfortunately, not all developers can get the XDK. Requests for it are carefully checked by Microsoft to determine whether the release of the program will be profitable.

A logical question arises: how to turn the source code of the program into an application for the Xbox, if the necessary XDK libraries for this are available only to the elite? Therefore, as a rule, only free source code is distributed on the sites (for example, in the form of the sourceforge.net project).

So, in addition to Visual Studio .NET, you will need the XDK 5778 compiler. Fortunately, a third-party Xbox compiler has recently appeared. XBMC Package 1.0 Beta can be downloaded at www.Emule.com.

At the same time, Microsoft developers in Redmont seem to have underestimated the potential of the Xbox as a multimedia center. The company could now sell a sufficiently powerful Xbox Media Center in the form of, say, the “Xbox Home Theater Edition” at a higher price, equipped with the appropriate equipment. If Microsoft took such a step, then today's problem would not have arisen.

Xbox as a PC

Xbox is the best suited for the role of a multi-purpose platform, because the console is equipped with standard PC components, including DVD drives from Philips, Samsung and Thompson, an 8-GB Seagate hard drive, a 733-MHz Pentium III, an nVidia graphics processor and a simple motherboard. This is how Microsoft was able to lower the price to $ 200.

Xbox Modification

The increase in Xbox performance and the expansion of the console’s potential is largely dependent on processor upgrades. Modifying the Xbox using a special chip disables the need for digital signatures, which, according to Microsoft's requirements, should be equipped with any program. To do this, you must enter the modified firmware in the BIOS Flash ROM Xbox. Depending on the type of chip, users have new features, including:

  • you can run any programs that are not signed by Microsoft,
  • use hard drives up to 120 GB,
  • transfer data via FTP to the Xbox using various programs (for example, XBMC),
  • use 128 MB of memory instead of 64 MB.
