Useful Tips

How to use filezilla in the right way

Various protocols are used to transfer data between computers. To connect to the server where your site data is stored and work with them, they usually use the FTP data transfer protocol. To realize this opportunity, they use special clients, one of which is FileZilla.

FileZilla FTP client can be downloaded from our website. It is one of the popular programs that supports all operating systems and a secure connection. In FileZilla it is called FTPS - protection using SSL or TLS, or SFTP - an extension of the SSH protocol.

To connect to a remote computer using SFTP, you must enter the same information as in normal mode (username, server address and password), but the port must be different, depending on the hosting provider. On some, this may be 2222.

To log in via FTPS, an SSH connection is used, where instead of the server name, the domain is indicated, as well as a username and password.

Sometimes the connection can be denied. To do this, enter the server or hosting control panel and close access in the FTP section.

How to connect to the site using FileZilla

Open the FileZilla program. The entire interface is in Russian, so there should be no problems. To gain access to the directories and files of the hosting or site server, you must enter the data that is usually sent to the mail by the host. Here's what to do in this case:

  • In the program, click the “File” button and go to the “Site Manager” section,
  • Click on the button “New site”,
  • On the right we enter the data for the connection:
    • Host - address or server name,
    • Port - usually 21,
    • Protocol - FTP or SFTP,
    • Encryption - choose according to the situation,
    • Input Type - Normal,
    • User - the username has come to your mail from the hosting provider,
    • Password - the password is also in the letter that came from the host.
  • To connect to the web server you need to click the "Connect" button.

In the box at the top you can see the connection status. First comes authorization, then retrieving a list of directories and retrieving them. If you enter data incorrectly, red lines with errors will appear.

After connecting, in the first section, called "Remote Site" will be available directories in a tree view. Expand each folder, the contents of this folder appear in the lower section.

Now you can fully work with files.

What actions can be performed with data in FileZilla?

  • Any file from the host can be downloaded to a computer, and if you download several files, you can add them to the task.
  • Create directories and files on the server,
  • You can delete, rename and move files to various directories.
  • It is possible to set access rights.
  • You can set file attributes in directories; this is the same as access rights.
  • Downloaded files can be uploaded to the host again by dragging and dropping the file into the program window.

Why do I get an “Invalid login” error when logging in?

Most often, this problem is associated with an incorrectly entered password. If you go to the mail, then in the sent document from the hoster contains the following information:

  • Data for entering the control panel - usually they coincide with the input via FTP,
  • Specific FTP login details - login, password and host address,
  • MySQL database login data.

If there is a server, then authorization information can be changed if desired. Make sure that you do not change the username and password for entering the server.

Also, it is not recommended to copy the password and paste it into the field, as usually a space is added at the end. Enter the password and login manually.

Perhaps you did not manage to contact the host via FTP in any way. Try contacting the technical support of your hosting provider.

It is worth trying to use a connection through a browser. If it works, then the problem arose on the software side and it needs to be either restarted or reinstalled. To log in via FTP through a browser, enter the following command in the address bar:

Some browsers may not support this protocol; modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera should be used.

What to do if the file is not uploaded to the hosting or the upload is empty

Usually this is due to exceeding the quota of disk space - a certain amount of storage allocated for each user. You can find out if the quota is exceeded in the host or server control panel. If this theory is confirmed, it will be necessary to increase the tariff characteristics, namely the free space on the hard disk or SSD.

If it is not possible to create a directory, then make sure that the name is not Cyrillic.

When downloading files, there are cases that they weigh too much, so the download does not work in normal mode. Uploading files is small.

How to use filezilla in Russian

Good afternoon! Today we’ll talk about the Filezill program. Filezilla - is an FTP client program that allows you to connect your PC to the server. At the same time, it’s quite convenient to install various plugins, files, etc. on your site or vice versa. In another way, this software has quite a few features. We will think how to use filezilla in a more convenient way.

I know that quite a few site owners perform similar operations on the server itself, including not only downloading or installing files, but also creating their own resources directly on the hosting, installing the engine and other operations. It seems to me that working directly on the hosting is rather inconvenient. Therefore, I decided to tell how to use filezilla.

Before creating this blog, I already used Filezill's software with might and main. I was engaged in downloading files from file managers and installing them on warez resources. For these purposes, I used filezilla software. Therefore, when creating the site, I immediately began to use this software.

I tried several times to do the same, using a browser or on a hosting in the control panel. I realized that through an FTP client all this is much more convenient and simple. A program such as Total Commander also helps connect to the server. But I still like Filezilla more.

In my opinion, the total commander has quite a few purposes, and it performs them at an average level, and if the program is tailored for a certain action, for example, connecting to a server, it makes it much faster, more convenient and better.

You can download the software itself on many sites, the program is free. But I prefer directly from the manufacturer’s website by entering the URL

Then you need to install FileSill. This is done very simply, on the machine. Then, after installing the software, a direct connection is made to the server using ftp connection. I can show you the resource control panel using the example of hosting

Daddies and files in it look like this. If you want to place any folder or file on the server, you will have to use the function of downloading the folder from the PC. If you need to edit the file, we will again have to use this panel on the hosting.

How to use filezilla we study this software

An FTP client makes this job a lot easier. To connect to our blog using FileSilla, we need to know some data, or rather, we need a login, host and connection password. Knowing them is not difficult. When buying a site on a hosting, this information was sent to your mailbox. If you deleted this letter and the data disappeared, you can find them on the same panel of your hosting. They are there.

We go further. After starting the FTP client, click on the “file” button, then go to the “site manager” and add a new site. You can call him as you like best. For example - Site 1, etc. Then we go to the right column, and there we enter the data we need in the "Host" menu.

Then select “Input Type”. Choose "normal". We go to the "User" section and insert the login issued on the hosting into the working line. In the "password" section, enter the password that we received on the server. It remains for us to click on the "connection".

If you perform these steps correctly, you will successfully connect to the hosting. Then, in the column on the right, you will see the daddies of your site.

Now, you should not think about how to use filezilla, as the structure of this program resembles the structure of the Explorer quite strongly. All files and folders work the same way. That is, when you double-click the mouse, we open the daddy and we see its components.

If necessary, you can click on any file and holding the left mouse button just drag it to any place we need on the PC. It is possible in the left window of Filezilla, where the sections of our PC are displayed. Or drag the file to any section of the Explorer program that should be open. Filezilla even allows you to perform manipulations with the Total Commander program if you are used to using it.

Next, make changes to the desired file or folder that we copied, and return them to their place in the same way, after which they will be overwritten. At the same time, at the bottom of filezilla we will see these manipulations. Namely:

- how many files were downloaded,

- how much work,

- how many failed downloads.

I want to note right away that there should not be unsuccessful downloads. If the download fails, try again.

The removal from the server works on the same principle. To do this, select the desired folder and click on "Delete" through the context menu. In the same way, you can rename the desired file or set the rights to it.

I think it became clear to you that working with a filezilla is much more comfortable than with the same control panel. You need to place a new plug-in, some kind of daddy or file, just open the FTP client, connect to the hosting and perform the necessary actions. Pretty simple. When loading through the panel, errors are not uncommon, they also happen with filezilla, but much less often!

I hope you now know how to use filezilla! Good luck!

Why do I need an FTP client

In order to better understand the purpose of programs such as Filezilla, you need to understand the data transfer protocols used in computer networks.

The easiest way to do this is with a real-life example.

Looking out into the street, we will see that different cars constantly scurry back and forth on the roads. They are all different - cars create comfort, sightseeing buses give passengers an overview, trucks carry goods. In principle, each car can perform different functions - it is possible, but impractical, to throw tourists into the back of KAMAZ and carry along excursion routes.

Similarly, different protocols are used to “transport” different types of information on the network.

Most familiar to all are HTTP and HTTPS - these are protocols designed to receive information from Internet sites. By requesting data on these protocols, we get beautiful pages of sites - browsers are used to work with them (the browser is this).

FTP is a different protocol. It is not intended for beautiful visualization and plays the role of a workhorse, which imperceptibly for others carries large volumes of data that do not need to be visually displayed (at least immediately) - you just need to transfer it to the server or download from it. FTP is decrypted - File Transfer Protokol (file transfer protocol)

We will not go into the intricacies of FTP here, let it remain to specialized specialists. I only note that the use of FTP allows you to transfer data quickly and less load computers and servers.

To use the FTP protocol, special programs are used - FTP clients, Filezilla also belongs to Komi.

The task of such a program is to connect to an FTP server, indicate the place where it will be necessary to download, send a download request and save the files.

Filezilla has gained its popularity due to several points:

  1. This FTP client is easy to use,
  2. The program is completely free,
  3. In case of interruptions in communication, the resume works,
  4. You can adjust the speed,
  5. And much more.

Install Filezilla

Since Filezilla is a free application, you should download it only from the official site, so as not to cling to different viruses that different pirates like to supply their assemblies with.

The official website of Filezilla - (download page)

On this page, select the version that matches your operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac). At the moment, under Windows there is a portable version that does not require installation (you can upload it to a USB flash drive and always have it at hand).

Save the file of the appropriate version, run it and install Filezilla, following the instructions. There are only 2 steps - choosing the folder for installation and the program language (Russian is supported), stopping at them in detail does not make sense.

Setting up Filezilla (connecting to an FTP server)

To start the program, you need to establish a connection between the computer where it is installed and the server. Connecting to the server is the only mandatory setting - we’ll start from there.

When you start filezilla, a window consisting of 5 working areas will open in front of you:

  1. Control Panel,
  2. Connection status
  3. Files on the local computer,
  4. Files on the server
  5. File Transfer Report.

While there is no connection to the FTP server, part of the windows are empty.

First of all, we are interested in the leftmost button in the control panel (open the site manager):

Clicking it will bring up a form to fill in server data.

Step 1 - click on the button “New Site” (next time its data will already be saved).

Step 2 - in the list of "My Sites" appears "New Site" - rename it to a memorable name, in my example it is "hosting timeweb".

Step 3 - filling in the data to access the site. If you connect, as I have in the example, to the site hosting, then the access data must be taken from them (in any case, this information is taken from the server administration).

What do you need:

  1. A host is a server address; it can be either in the form of a domain name or in the form of an IP address. For example, in timeweb this is
  2. Port - is also taken from the hoster and is the same for all accounts.
  3. Protocol - leave FTP by default (unless you require otherwise).
  4. Encryption - if no special option is specified, leave it by default.
  5. Type of entry - there may be options. In public FTP servers, everyone can use files without restriction and anonymous login is indicated there. With individual access to your hosting we set normal - this opens the fields for entering the login and password.
  6. Comment - an optional field, in it you can enter any tips and explanations for yourself.

Step 4 - the final action for connecting - clicking the "Connect" button.

If everything is filled out correctly, the result will be a connection to the FTP server - we will see this by the messages in the “Connection Status” fields and by the files that appear in the “Remote Site” window:

Most servers break the connection over time, if there is no action for a long time, reconnect to resume.

File transfer

To transfer data, you need to connect to the FTP server, open the desired folder on the local computer on the left, and the remote directory on the right.

Select the files or folders that we want to transfer with the mouse and:

  • Or just drag it from one side to the other,
  • Either right-click on the selected objects and select the “Download” or “Upload to Server” command in the context menu, depending on the direction of data transfer.

Download from server:

Upload to server:

Failure to resume data

No one is safe from communication breaks while transmitting data via the Internet, but Filezilla monitors every bit of information and monitors their successful passage.

If something went wrong and the file was transferred with distortions or did not reach at all, it is fixed in a special tab “Failed transfers” - these objects can be transferred in a new way without affecting what downloaded correctly.

The tab is at the bottom of the program window:

Create and edit folders and files

This part could not be described, since the screenshots above already show that there are corresponding buttons in the context menu:

  • Create directory - add an empty folder,
  • Create a new file - specify any extension manually
  • Rename - gives the object a new name,
  • View / Edit - allows you to edit files in text mode,
  • File permissions - sets read, write, and execute permissions for different categories of users.

This program combines simplicity and functionality, for which many webmasters love it. Today you learned how to configure and use Filezilla, learned how to connect to a hosting service and how to edit files remotely, perhaps now this program will be added to your arsenal of web tools and will make it easier to work on the network.

After reading this article, you will learn:

  • connect to FTP server
  • download and upload files
  • use the site manager.

If you have already used any FTP client, perhaps you should immediately go to a more advanced user guide.

We will assume that you have already installed and started the FileZilla client (installation guide).

Server connection

We will use such data for login.

If the connection occurred without errors, the right "column" of the client will show a list of files and directories instead of notification "Not connected to server".

Navigation and window layout

Legend: 1. toolbar, 2. quick connect panel, 3. message log, 4. local panel, 5. remote (server) panel, 6. queue of transferred files (full-size version of the image)

At this point we will familiarize ourselves with the location of windows in FileZilla.

Under toolbar (1) and quick connect panel (2) in message log (3) Messages related to file transfer and connection are displayed. Below you will see a list of files. In the left column (local panel, 4) local files and directories are displayed, i.e. the contents of the computer on which the FileZilla client is running. In the right column (server panel, 5) the files and directories of the server to which you are connected are displayed. In both columns, the directory tree is displayed at the top and the contents of the current directory at the bottom. Navigation is carried out by a simple selection of items in the tree or list, as in any other file manager. At the bottom of the window is placed file queue (6) with a list of files that have already been downloaded or will be downloaded.

Upload files

To start in local panel go to the directory that contains the required data (for example, index.html and images /). Now, go to the desired destination directory on the server (using the list in server panel) To load data, select the appropriate files / directories and drag them from local at remote panel. After that, you will notice that the files will be added to turn at the bottom of the window and, after some time, removed from there after downloading to the server (of course, if everything happened without errors). The downloaded files and directories will be displayed in the server list in the right column.

List of local and server files after boot

Note: If you don’t like to “drag” files, just right-click on the selected files / directories and click "Download"

Note (for advanced): If you enable filtering and download the entire directory, only unfiltered files from this directory will be uploaded to the server.

Download files

Downloading files or entire directories, in essence, works the same way as downloading, you just drag the files / directories the other way around: from the remote panel to the local one.

Note: If you (accidentally) try to overwrite a file while downloading or downloading it, FileZilla will by default display a dialog box with different options (overwrite, rename, skip,.).

Using Site Manager

After you have made sure that you can transfer files (otherwise, practice this), you may want to add server information to the site manager to facilitate subsequent connections. Select item Copy connection to Site Manager on the menu File, after which the site manager will be opened, and a new item will be created in it filled with relevant information. Note that the item name is selected and highlighted - this means that you can enter the appropriate name to facilitate the search for this item in the future (for example, enter FTP server - you can rename it later). Now close the dialog by clicking on Ok.

Next time, to connect to the server, just select it in the site manager and click Connect.

We assume that you are now able to use the core features of FileZilla.

One final note: most tasks can be solved in different ways. This guide describes the most obvious solutions - after spending some time working with the program and reading the rest of the documentation, you will probably find the fastest solutions for your tasks (for example, buttons for frequently used commands are located on the toolbar, some of them respond to a right click) button).

If you are confident enough in your abilities, perhaps you should start a more advanced user guide to explore the rest of the possibilities that were not disclosed in the above example.
