Useful Tips

Preflight inspection

Going on a trip, everyone wants their flight to go smoothly and not be overshadowed by unpleasant surprises. That is why, before departure, passengers are advised to familiarize themselves with the pre-flight search procedure at the airport, as well as with a list of things that you can and cannot carry with you on board the aircraft.

Airport entry screening

To ensure safety during the flight, there are several levels of check for hand luggage and baggage of passengers. The first search of personal belongings is carried out at the entrance to the airport.

Each person entering the airport building, regardless of whether it is a passenger or an escort, must go through the frame of a special stationary metal detector. First you need to remove your belt, lay out money, phone, keys and check that there are no other metal things in your pockets. Additionally, security personnel check each with a handheld metal detector.

Airport Screening

Suitcases, bags and hand luggage need to be put on a special tape x-ray scanner. While luggage is moving along the tape, employees examine its contents. Since checking baggage at the airport very carefully, questions may arise about suspicious items. In this case, the owner will be asked to open the suitcase and show the dubious thing.

It should be remembered that the following items cannot be carried in an airplane even in the luggage compartment:

  • flammable and explosive substances,
  • any substances that emit radiation
  • signaling devices
  • any types of gases
  • poisonous and toxic substances, bacteria and viruses,
  • corrosive caustic substances
  • oxidizing agents
  • firearms and any imitators thereof, including children's toys in the form of pistols,
  • ammunition, flares, bullets, firecrackers.

Entrance Inspection

With special permission, passengers have the opportunity to carry hunting rifles, firearms, drafts, swords, sabers, gas canisters with them. All these items are stored on board the aircraft in compartments to which access is restricted. To transport weapons, a person must have the right to store and carry them, and for flights on international flights you must have an international permit. The absence of such entails not only the seizure of weapons, but also the imposition of an administrative fine.

Weapons of any type must be discharged and packed in special cases. Before passing control, it is necessary to issue a warning to the security personnel of the airport terminal that you are going to carry weapons and present all the necessary documents.

Important! Each country has its own requirements for the transport of weapons and other dangerous goods. It is best to clarify the details of the doubts you have at a particular airport or with airline representatives.

Baggage inspection at the airport entrance is usually quick. At large airports such as Dubai International Airport, queues are not created due to the large number of checkpoints.

Baggage check after check-in for a flight

After passengers have entered the airport building, they go to the check-in counter for the flight. Here the luggage is weighed, a special sticker is hung on it, and then the suitcases leave on a special tape. Many people think that at this the procedure for checking it at the airport ends and the bags are immediately loaded onto the plane, but this is not at all the case.

After check-in, luggage passes the next inspection. All bags are scanned, and if any suspicious items are found, they will be inspected manually. In this case, another sticker will appear on the suitcase, indicating that the baggage has been subjected to additional inspection.

In some countries, when checking luggage, they use not only inspection equipment for airports, but also specially trained dogs. In particular, a cynological service was created in Moscow at the Domodedovo Airport. Animals are looking for explosives and narcotic substances and food prohibited for transportation on an airplane.

Pre-flight inspection area and hand baggage check

After checking in for a flight, passengers pass into the preflight inspection area. A thorough check of hand luggage and personal items departing is carried out here. Screening at the airport at this stage is mandatory throughout the world and is designed to prevent objects that could be used for a terrorist attack from getting on board the aircraft.

All personal belongings, including hand luggage, are put in a special basket and sent along a moving tape for thorough scanning by an X-ray machine. Outerwear and hats, belts, watches, jewelery, a mobile phone must be laid out separately on a tape.

On a note! Most airports require you to take off your shoes, but under the new rules in Russia it is allowed not to take off shoes if the height of the heel does not exceed 2.5 centimeters and its thickness is less than 1 centimeter.

While one of the security officers will shine through things, the second will track how the passenger passes through the metal detector. In some cases, a tactile search is additionally performed. It is mandatory carried out by a person of the same sex with the inspected. This procedure is carried out because the metal detector is technically unable to detect a weapon whose case is made of plastic or ceramic, and also will not detect glass capsules with narcotic and explosive substances.

Preflight inspection area.

Particular attention should be paid to how hand baggage is checked at the airport. First of all, you need to make sure that there are no prohibited items in your hand luggage, namely:

  • piercing and cutting objects, including manicure scissors, tweezers, nail files, corkscrews, knitting needles, etc.,
  • any liquids, as well as empty containers that can be filled with a liquid with a volume of more than 100 milliliters (total volume of not more than 1 liter),
  • explosive substances, poisons, chemicals, radioactive and flammable substances,
  • aerosols, spray cans, lighters,
  • magnetic objects.

Important! Airlines are entitled to make additions and adjustments to the rules for the carriage of hand luggage. It is better to check with your air carrier about the possibility of transporting an item.

Passengers have the right to take with them to the cabin:

  • mobile phone, laptop, camera or camera,
  • documents and book
  • goods purchased at duty free,
  • 1 bouquet of flowers
  • outerwear
  • umbrella or cane
  • equipment necessary for the movement of people with disabilities (crutches, stretchers, wheelchairs),
  • diapers and a baby cradle,
  • baby food in any quantity.

Remember that you will have to say goodbye to hand luggage items that have not undergone preflight inspection. Otherwise, you risk being removed from the flight. It will not work to pick them up even in the post-flight period.

Carry-on baggage

The allowed dimensions of hand luggage are 55 × 40 × 20 cm, the maximum weight is from 5 to 10 kilograms. However, as a rule, these parameters are not measured during the inspection. When checking in for a flight, an employee says whether your bag is suitable for transportation in the cabin or whether it should be checked in. The pram is not included in carry-on baggage, but it can be checked in directly at the airport before the ramp. Upon receipt of luggage, the stroller is returned first.

Thus, when preparing for a flight, be prepared to undergo personal searches, baggage checks and hand luggage. You must make sure in advance that there are no prohibited items among your personal items. Questions of interest should be clarified with your carrier or by calling the departure airport. If necessary, transport dangerous goods, prepare all the necessary documents. And most importantly, remember that all procedures for pre-flight searches of things and passengers at the airport are aimed at ensuring safety during the flight. That is why you should treat with understanding all prohibitions and precautions.

Airport pre-flight inspection

Each departing passenger is required to undergo inspection immediately before boarding the ship. The search is carried out by the security service together with the police.

First of all, it is necessary to provide airport employees with outerwear, wallets, belts, all contents of pockets and hand luggage. All things go through an X-ray television inspection, and the passengers themselves pass through the metal detector frame. The new inspection rules at the airports of the Russian Federation make it possible not to remove the belt when its width is less than 4 centimeters, thickness up to 0.5 cm. Also, shoes with heels below 2.5 centimeters and a thickness of up to 1 centimeter do not need to be removed. Nevertheless, by decision of the inspection inspector, the passenger may be forced to provide things for inspection, despite their size.

Passengers who have implanted devices that stimulate the activity of the heart are exempted from inspection by technical means and undergo regular contact screening. To do this, you must provide appropriate medical certificates.

A passenger who is suspected of transporting prohibited substances may be separately examined by the security service. Hand luggage is also subject to inspection.

Disabled persons or passengers on a stretcher who are not able to independently go through pre-flight screening pass it individually at the airport’s first-aid post.

According to the order of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation of 2007, in hand luggage, passengers can have:

Mercury tonometer in standard packaging.

Mercury manometer or barometer in standard sealed packaging.

Dry ice is not more than two kilograms.

Passengers who refuse to go through the inspection are not allowed to fly.

Baggage on board an aircraft

The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation in 2007 issued an order with the rules for the transport of liquids on board aircraft. Each passenger has the ability to transport gel-like substances and liquids with a total volume of up to one liter. The volume of each fluid container should be no more than 100 milliliters. All items of carry-on baggage must be packed in transparent bags separately. Nevertheless, it is recommended that all things that will not be used during the flight be checked in as luggage.

The following liquids are allowed in carry-on baggage:

Water, juices, syrups, honey, soups, jam.

Lotions, oils and creams.

Cologne, perfume, toilet water.

Deodorants, shaving foam.

Prohibited Substances

Explosive substances and items for explosion:

All types of gunpowder, regardless of quantity and packaging.

Cartridges for military weapons and small-caliber.

A set of cartridges for gas weapons.

Light, signal rockets, smoke bombs, firecrackers, sparklers.

Dynamite, TNT, Ammonal, Thol and all similar substances.

Detonators, fireproof cord, electric igniters.

Liquefied and compressed gas:

Propane, butane and analogues.

Spray cans filled with tear or nerve gas.

Search Tips:

  • keep your passport and boarding pass in your hands or pocket,
  • transfer everything from the pockets to the bag (primarily metal objects) before passing the metal detector,
  • remove outer clothing, shoes, if the height of your heels is more than 2.5 cm, and the sole is thicker than 1 cm, belt, hats, scarves and put them in the baskets available in the pre-flight inspection room,
  • put electronic devices (telephones, players, laptops) in a separate container, it is not recommended to put devices directly on the scanner tape without a basket, as the risk of damage increases;
  • Be prepared for the fact that hollow and soft children's toys, as well as any electronic devices are checked in special ways,
  • don’t worry, it’s safe to walk through the detector frame.

Passengers are required to comply with all requirements of airport inspection personnel.

Passenger weapons must be handed over to the aviation security officer at the airport for clearance and transfer to crew for temporary storage during the flight. Registration and transfer of weapons on board the aircraft is carried out no later than 1.5 hours before the departure of your flight.

A detailed list of hazardous substances and items prohibited for carriage by crew members and passengers on board an aircraft is contained in the Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by ICAO Air.

At the airport you should not joke inappropriately: “bomb”, “acid” and so on. The passenger can be removed from the flight, transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for further investigation and criminal prosecution in accordance with article 207 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Knowingly False Report of an Act of Terrorism”.

It is allowed to bring purchases from Duty Free into the cabin of the aircraft, provided that they were sealed at the checkout in a plastic bag along with a check confirming that the purchase was made on the day of travel, the packaging is not allowed to be opened before arrival at the destination. Please note that permission to carry liquids from Duty Free applies only to direct flights. On transfer flights, liquids packed in the Duty Free at the departure airport will be seized at the transfer airport.

Pre-flight screening of passengers, baggage and hand luggage at the airport is carried out in accordance with the “Rules for pre-flight and post-flight screening” approved by Order No. 104 of July 25, 2007 of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation as amended by Order of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation of April 16, 2012. No. 96 “On amendments to the Rules for the pre-flight and after-flight searches approved by order of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation of July 25, 2007 No. 104”.

Sequence and types of control

Проверка перед вылетом предполагает несколько этапов. Вначале клиент вместе с багажом проходит регистрацию. Depending on the items being transported, the passenger must pass a sanitary-quarantine, phytosanitary and veterinary check. To access international flights, they are supplemented by customs controls. Usually this is a migration and border check. Preflight inspection is the final stage.

Who is checking

The inspection is carried out by employees of the aviation security service. In addition to them, transport police are also involved, which works on the territory of the airport terminal. On local airlines, it happens that there is no police on a staffing table.

Then for inspection may be involved:

  • employees of the territorial police departments,
  • crew commander
  • one of the crew members as appointed by the commander.

In all cases, the procedure is carried out according to the established rules.

Place of control and equipment

For checking at the airport, a specially fenced area is allocated. It installs technical equipment, video equipment for surveillance. Personal searches of certain categories of passengers usually include cabins or separate rooms.

Of the special equipment used:

  • stationary or portable metal detectors,
  • X-ray scanners
  • introscopes - allows you to check the contents of objects without opening them.

Depending on the conditions of the terminal, various technologies may be used. All inspection equipment must be certified. In addition, dogs of the cynological service participate in the checks.

Personal identification

The procedure begins with the identification of the passenger.

To successfully pass this stage, you need to have a set of documents with you:

  • identity card - a general civil passport for domestic flights, a passport for departure abroad,
  • ticket confirming the right to fly,
  • boarding pass,
  • other documents on the situation.

At this stage, the security officer will offer to tell you if you have items prohibited for transportation. In case of suspicion of a potential danger - will conduct a psychological survey. Upon successful completion of this stage, a ticket or boarding pass is marked. With it you can go further.

X-ray television introscope

Hand luggage and personal items are inspected using a special device - an introscope. It works on the principle of medical x-ray machines, shining through luggage. At this stage, you will have to remove outer clothing and a hat, take off your shoes, take out a belt and put it all on the shipping tape. Same way you need to lay out all the metal objects, smartphone, devices for photo and video. Since 2012, exceptions have been added to shoes with a sole no thicker than a centimeter and a heel no higher than 2.5 cm, a belt no wider than 4 cm and no thicker than half a centimeter. If the introscope shows the presence of prohibited or potentially dangerous objects, this means that they will conduct a direct contact examination.

Metal detector and scanner

In addition to inspecting things, x-rays at the airport can be used to inspect passengers. This is done using an x-ray scanner. The metal detector frame shows hidden iron objects. The scanner will show other dangerous substances hidden on the body under clothing. The dose of radiation received is minimal and does not harm health. According to calculations, she is less than what the nurse receives in the x-ray room of the clinic. But pregnant women are not recommended to go through the scanner. They are inspected by a conventional metal detector or its manual counterpart.

A passenger is sent for manual customs inspection if something suspicious has cleared under the scanner. Or if after repeated passage the metal detector frame continues to fire.

Personal search and contact method

The most common reason for an individual inspection is the strange behavior of a traveler. Often it can testify to criminal intentions.

Contact screening applies in more specific cases:

  • threats of hijacking or hijacking of a liner following a specific flight in a specific direction,
  • information about the presence of dangerous items, weapons or explosives,
  • discovering such things among things
  • if the airport does not have equipment for inspection,
  • when the client is dressed in spacious clothes that hide the contours of the body,
  • when there are things whose contents cannot be established by technical means.

The suspect is inspected in a separate room for recording in the protocol. Two witnesses and a policeman are present.

The personal or contact method is also used if, for medical reasons, the use of any technical means is contraindicated. This happens when a person has a pacemaker implanted. The basic rule of such searches is that an employee of the same sex as the passenger must comply with it.

Baggage inspection features

To check in your baggage at the airport, the same check-in counter is provided. Here he is weighed. Baggage inspection is carried out both in the presence of the owner, and without him. If the owner is not present, the decision to open the bags and suitcases together is taken by the security commander and the police officer. This must be watched by two witnesses. In some cases, representatives of other public services may be involved.

Cargo inspection

The cargo gets on board the aircraft only after viewing it with technical equipment. It is similar to that used in the search of people. If for some reason the equipment cannot be used, the cargo is checked visually or manually under the supervision of a warehouse employee.

In cases where the contents of the cargo raise suspicions from the security service, its chief may decide:

  • hold him until loading onto the plane in safe conditions for at least two hours before the flight,
  • place it in a special decompression chamber for the same period. It creates the necessary conditions for sealing the level of atmospheric pressure.

In addition to the content, the control procedure goes through the outer packaging of the cargo. If it is damaged - baggage is not allowed to fly. The transit cargo is not checked again if during its stay at the intermediate point of the flight illegal access was not allowed. Transfer baggage is checked again before being mixed with goods that have already been inspected. The difference between transit and transfer is that in the first embodiment, after stopping, the next flight will be on the same plane under the same flight. The second case involves a change of aircraft and flights during the journey.

Baggage of public services is transported under special regulations and is not subject to control.

Some recommendations

In order for the search to pass quickly and without problems, pay attention to some useful tips:

  1. Read the baggage regulations of the selected airline. Find out the list of prohibited items.
  2. Before departure, calculate the weight of the items for the flight to fit in the free baggage allowance.
  3. Wear clothing that will not cause problems during the search.
  4. For international flights, carry a minimum of cash. Put the remaining funds on a bank card.
  5. Find out in advance where the terminal for registration is located.
  6. Leave home in a few hours to arrive at the airport on time.

If you follow these simple tips, access to the neutral zone can be obtained without unnecessary nerves and slowly.
